For Christmas 2005 Paul and I purchased a film collection from a fellow LVG member, so I could fill my boots with all things vamp. Some films were fantastic, others I'm not so bothered about keeping, so I thought I'd review them all, log my results as I go, and ebay the stuff I don't like - all proceeds are going to our wedding fund! If you're after proper reviews than read the LVG's Chronicles or one of the review books or web sites as I don't have much of a talent as a writer... I just want a personal record of my thoughts and ratings to help me decide what I want to keep.

A Danca Dos Vampires (1967)

A Roman Polanski film aka The Fearless Vampire Killers or Pardon Me, But Your Teeth Are In My Neck! A comedy that unfortunately only got a couple of laughs from me - once when the camp son of Count Krolock went to take a chunk out of Alfred (Polanski) but got a book shoved in his mouth instead, and second when the hunchback went James Bond styley down the snowy mountain in a coffin! The Count's castle and surrounding location are quite fab, as is the look of the film, but the real standout point is the stunning Sharon Tate (and her red dress), unfortunately she's shown too little to make it worth watching often. This was apparently Ms Tate's last film before dying at the hands of Charles Manson although there are films released after this according to the Internet Movie Database. The pace is slow and the bungling by the Professor and his sidekick just plain irritating. Colour/110 min/not rated.

A polish vampire in burbank (1985)

Writer, producer and director Pirro was forced to star as Dupah, a polish vampire who has never bitten anyone, after Eddie Deezen (Eugene in Grease) quit the role. Kicked out of his castle in the Burbank hills by his father, he sets out to find his own victim and ends up with the girl of his dreams (the stunning Lori Sutton). This comedy was the first film shot in Super-8mm format to be shown on a national cable network, and ended up grossing over $500,000 on video. The film only cost about $1500 to make, and none of actors got paid much if at all, which gets my respect when you consider that the film was mostly shot at night between 12-4 am, and they probably would have had to have other jobs on the go as well. A real labour of love, and reasonably amusing - special features were interesting too. Colour/84 min/not rated.

Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)
Universal's last outing for all its classic monsters. Bud and Lou team up with Chaney Jr's hero/Wolf Man to stop Dracula and a mad female scientist (Lenore Aubert) from transplanting Lou's brain into the Frankenstein monster. This was Bela Lugosi's second (and last) time he officially portrayed the Count on screen. I love the look and feel of this film, and the female actresses add class and glamour... the monsters are fab, but Abbott and Costello are just not funny - take them out, and the 'comedy' element and you'd have a brilliant film. Aka Sisters Of Satan / Innocents From Hell. Justine is sent to a monastery and quickly succumbs to the evil influence of Alucarda. This leads to them drinking each other's blood, biting other nuns on the neck, participating in a black magic orgy with a goat-headed demon and Justine rising naked from a blood-filled coffin. A bit too much of the occult for my liking and not enough of the vamps. Quite disturbing. Colour/85 min/R rated.

American Vampire (1997)
Frankie's parents leave to Europe for the summer, and vampires decide to hang out at his house. A slow moving film, with few highlights - Carmen Electra adds some glamour, and Adam West as The Big Kahuna, some comedy, but let's face it neither of them are going to set the world alight with their acting ability! Angel Of The Night (1998)
I liked the outline of the story... Rebecca has inherited her grandmother's gothic mansion and brings both her best friend and her boyfriend for a weekend. While exploring the crypts they discover an old dusty book, which describes the life of a vampire. As the story unfolds, it becomes apparent that the vampire was Rebecca's great grandfather, Rico. Later that night Rebecca finds herself in a trance, reciting an occult ritual described in the book resulting in the opening of the coffin and new life for Rico. The film is laughable in many places, and could have moved along nicely without the boyfriend, who is an arse, and the best friend, who is a bitch... watch out for the priest (Hector Vega Mauricio) - if all priests looked like him churches would be filled every day with women of all ages! Barry McKenzie Holds His Own (1974)
Erich Count Plasma kidnaps Barry's aunt Edna, who he believes is the Queen of England, so that she can promote the Transylvanian tourist industry. A very bad taste 'comedy' with copious vomiting and beer swilling with lots of jokes at the Pomme's expense... you will need the subtitles to understand most of it. Saving grace is again, the glamorous female vampire! Colour/93 mins/M rating.

Billy The Kid Versus Dracula (1966)
The Count poses as the uncle of ranch owner Betty with intent to turn her into his mate. John Carradine is good, but a bit OTT with all the trance/staring and strange lighting. Whilst I'm not usually a fan of westerns, I liked Billy the Kid and Betty, and the Dr is good for unexpected comedy - no education, picked up a few tricks of the trade from her husband (the town's real doctor before he died), and just happens to have a book with information on vampires in her collection, and knows just which page to turn to when needed! The bat is a bit poor, but this was 1966! Colour/73 mins/not rated.

Black Sabbath (1963)
A Mario Bava film, originally called The Three Faces Of Fear. Comprised of three separate horror stories - in one a beautiful woman is terrorised by calls from an ex-lover who has escaped prison for the pleasure of killing her; another is about a father who returns home after ridding the countryside of a vampire, but his family suspect he's been turned into one himself (stars Boris Karloff); the third is about a nurse haunted after stealing a ring from the finger of a dead medium. Well scripted and filmed pieces... definitely worth keeping an eye out for further Mario Bava films. Colour/92 mins/not rated.

Aka The Mask Of Satan. In 17th Century Moldavia, the evil Princess Asa (Barbara Steele) is condemned to death for witchcraft and vampirism. Two hundred years later, two doctors discover her crypt and accidentally set her resurrection in motion. To survive Asa must vampirise her ancestor Princess Katia (also played by Barbara Steele). I've read that everyone should aim to watch the uncut Mask Of Satan rather than the censored Black Sunday, but until then this version will most definitely do... a horror classic. Blood For Dracula (1974)

The Count searches Catholic Italy for "wirgin's" (that's virgin's) blood and encounters a family with four daughters who claim to be good pure girls, but in reality all but one of them has been sleeping with the gardener (who reminds me of Vanilla Ice!). Dracula throws up every time he encounters tainted blood and thereby discovers the family have been less than truthful. I wanted to like Udo Kier, he has a great look for a vampire, unfortunately any good acting is hidden very very deep in this film. Colour/93 mins/not rated.

Blood Of Dracula (1957) - (imdb show the wrong cover for this film as it didn't star Christopher Lee)

A tenuous connection with Dracula - a teacher abuses her position (no surprise there) by turning a pupil into a vampire using hypnosis and a strange amulet from Transylvania, all to prove a theory about human power being more potent than atomic! Advertising makes the vampire much better looking than the Eddy Munster version that appears in the film. DVD includes some interesting trailers, an interview with Samuel Arkoff, who produced a lot of films aimed at the teenage market, and a great collectors postcard series of artwork from other Arkoff films. Strapline is "will give you nightmares forever"... that is so not true, real life gives me more than this film ever will... in fact I think I've forgotten it already!

The Blood Spattered Bride (1972)

Based on Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla, which I have yet to read and so cannot compare, but I suspect this falls far from the original plot. Alexandra Bastedo as the lesbian vampire, Maribel Martin as the prudish bride, and Maria-Rosa Rodriguez as the creepy 12 year old all put in strong performances. The men's performances are very dated and quite forgettable... maybe it's because the women are naked a lot you remember them more but I truly do believe their talents extended beyond gratuitous nudity!

Dracula W/S (1979)

The 15th remake according to Videohound so obviously a must to stay in the collection, but maybe not one I'll watch that often. Nice to have a good budget and well-known talented actors, but pales in comparison to the 1992 version. Like Sean Connery, Frank Langella is much better looking as an older man, but I'd still rather watch Gary Oldman in this role. Colour/110 min/not rated.

A Wes Craven film, aka Dracula 2000 in the USA... no idea why, I can only assume it was due to release dates or copyright/licensing. Dracula's Daughter (1936) | son of dracula (see below)

Universal's sequel to the 1931 Dracula, and I can't decide if it shares equal standing or exceeds it. Gloria Holden plays Countess Maria Zaleska, the first female vampire in a movie. Van Helsing is arrested for killing Dracula and the Countess steals and burns Dracula's body in the hope that it was free her from her vampiric heritage. The Countess (who reminds me of my best friend stealth-bunny btw) is fabulous, and so are her outfits. A must have for any collection in my humble opinion. B&W/71 min/not rated.

Nadja (1994)

A David Lynch film and therefore arty and bizarre. At times the black-and-white footage works well and there are snippets of some really nice imagery, but I didn't like the whole film being void of colour. Videohound states that this 'emphasizes the dark world in which vampires operate' but I prefer the Interview With The Vampire imagery of it heightening the senses and that just doesn't work with this medium, you also miss the red of the blood which I enjoy... maybe a black-and-white film where the only colour is the blood would work? The Portishead songs fit well with Nadja's character and made me want to dig out their albums as I haven't listened to them for a while. Peter Fonda as Van Helsing is quite mad and reminded me of Sexy Goldfish! B&W/92 min/R rating.

To Die For (1988)

Brendan Hughes is the only excuse I have for enjoying this film so much. Whilst initially I thought him wimpy, there's something intriguing about him that helps you to see past the 80's-ness of the film and the awful special effects (or defects as Paul calls them). I want to see more of Mr Hughes, and although not in the sequel, Son Of Darkness To Die For II, Michael Praed is, so I want to see that too. Colour/88 min/18 certificate.

Vampirella (1996)
I'm amazed Talisa Soto accepted this film after becoming known in Licence To Kill (her second film), she outshines everyone else and show's up Roger Daltrey who had many more parts under his belt at this stage. It's a bit cheesy, but wets my appetite for the comic that it came from. Colour/85 mins/R rating.

Vampires (From The Hunger Collection With Terence Stamp) (2000)

Produced by Tony Scott (Top Gun) and Ridley Scott (Alien) I had high expectations about this DVD... always a bad sign! Short stories have never really grabbed me - too short to really understand everything that's going on with little character/plot development. There are four short stories on this DVD, interspersed with Terence Stamp driveling some 'intellectual', 'insightful' and 'thought-provoking' twaddle. The second story was vaguely amusing - Camilla had possibilities for an interesting story-line but you're shown her new recruits story instead! Best bit was when he tried to pick up a man in a woman's body so he could lose his virginity, and found out just how hard it is for anyone to walk in high heels and look cool! I have seen trailers for other stories from this series that look more promising, so I'll persevere. Colour.

Vampire's Kiss (1989)

Nicholas Cage stars as a New York executive who becomes convinced he's a vampire when one of his conquests (Jennifer Beal) bites his neck in the throes of passion. This film had so much potential, but just got it horrendously wrong. Nicholas Cage hamming up a Nosferatu style vampire, just annoyed me, and the film progresses painfully slow. Van Helsing: The London Assignment (2000)

Don't think that because this is an animation that it's fit just for the kiddies... I'm not sure I'd let any young ones watch this - in the opening scenes a lady's throat gets slit, and even in animation it's not pleasant, perhaps less so because you don't expect it of a cartoon... maybe I'm just used to the classic Tom & Jerry style cartoons and not enough of the alternative stuff, but it's a field I'm coming to appreciate as there are just so many bad vampire movies and the animated stuff is far superior! This is the prequel to the Van Helsing movie with Hugh Jackman playing the main character in both... Mr Jackman is by far my favourite Van Helsing seen to date. The DVD also features a behind-the-scenes look into the sequel which is well worth a watch or two. Colour/33 min/Not rated.
